Why Are We Unhappy…
Have you ever tried to understand and quantify unhappiness or where unhappiness is sourced from? Maybe during some of your quiet moments, you had a flash, but it disappeared as it appeared. Too many daily tasks, too many worries. This is how our life goes. So really:
Why sometimes do we feel miserable? Maybe because we cannot reach some targets, buy some dream things, or conquer the heart of an ideal person? And when we get those targets, how long are we happy?
How long would happiness last?
How long does happiness last? Let’s say your next dream is to have an expensive car, and in your mind, that car will make you happy. You will be indeed happy after buying that car but, for how long? What you fail to realize at that moment is that the big desire you had, became is an attachment. From the moment the car is yours, you will become stressed not to have an accident, not to lose it or not to break down one day, and if one of these things happens, you will feel miserable. This is, in fact, your new attachment. You became attached to this material thing that will keep you trapped in a false perception of happiness! That car, house, expensive clothes, and big bank account will not make you happy because that kind of happiness does not last long. When you obtain the thing you desire, you will want something else to make you feel happy. You will not say” Stop”, I got what I want, from now, I do not need anything else, I will be happy! I am telling you, it will take a little bit of time until you figure out a new target, and the race will start all over again.
Attachments are driving your life!
You do not have to be attached to something to be happy. If I am telling you that you are not alone and that all of us are trapped in various attachments, that will not make you feel better. Take a look around, and you will discover the absolute truth of life, nobody is genuinely happy; all of us are just pretending to be happy. So then how can we be happy?
We are all unhappy, and we are all unhappy with ourselves. The only way to change this is to stop being unhappy with yourself. Stop blaming others for your unhappiness. Stop complaining about your situation. What is it that makes you sad? Is it the money? Is it the job? Is it the relationship? Is it the house? Is it the car? Is it the clothes? Is it the food? Is it the time? Is it the place? Is it the people? Is it the family? Is it religion? Is it the culture? Is it the language? Is it education? Is it the health? Is it the age? Is it the gender? Is it the financial position?
How can we become happy?
Start looking at yourself and see what you can do to improve it. You may not like what you find, but you must first change yourself if you want to change things.
The moment you start changing yourself is when you become free from attachment. Be present, feel the moments, feel that you are alive, feel free of any attachment, and once you are free from attachment, you will never again be unhappy. This is because there is nothing to attach to. No one can take away your happiness or give you more than you already have. Happiness comes from within. It cannot come from outside.
I was reading an article on the internet and came across this quote by Nelson Mandela: “Happiness does not depend upon outward circumstances; it depends solely upon inward disposition”.
This is true. We should not expect anything from anyone else. We should focus on improving ourselves. We should focus our attention on becoming better people. We should focus on making ourselves happier. Once we are truly happy, we will naturally attract other positive people into our lives. We will also naturally attract negative people into our lives. But we should not let them bring us down. We should not allow their negativity to affect us. We should remain strong and continue to move forward.
Still confused, you do not know where you practically have to start?
If you are still confused, here are some practical steps to help you get started.
1) First of all, you need to understand why you are unhappy? What is it that makes your heart sad?
2) Next, you need to identify the source of your unhappiness. Where did it begin? Was it your parents? Your friends? Your boss? Your partner? Your children? Yourself? Who is responsible for your unhappiness?
Do you want to live in misery or do you want to live happily? 3) Now, you need to decide whether you want to stay in this state of misery forever or you want to change things. Which path would you choose?
4) Finally, you need to act now. It would be best if you put into practice everything you have learned so far. You need to apply the lessons you learned. You need to follow these four simple rules:
a) Be honest with yourself. Don’t lie to yourself.
b) Accept responsibility for your actions. Don’t blame others for your problems.
c) Think positively. Focus on the good things in your life.
d) Have faith in yourself. Believe in yourself.
5) Remember, you are the master of your destiny. You are the creator of your future. You are the architect of your own happiness. You are the author of your own story. You are the director of your own movie. You are the producer of your own success. You are the star of your own show. You are the director, the writer, and the actor of your own life.
6) If you really want to change things, then you need to believe in yourself. You need to have confidence in yourself. You need self-belief. You need to have faith in yourself. You need inner strength. You need courage. You need determination. You need willpower. You need commitment. You need discipline. You need patience. You need persistence. You need perseverance. You need passion. You need love.
7) If you want to change, you need to learn how to forgive. Forgive everyone who has hurt you.
8) If you want changes, then you need to release anger. Release all the anger inside you. Let go of all the resentment. Make peace with yourselves and the people around you.
9) If you want happiness, you need to let go of your attachment to money. Money does not bring lasting happiness. It brings temporary pleasure, but it never satisfies. Happiness comes from within.
10) If you want true happiness, then you need love. Love yourself first. Then love others. Love God. Love nature. Love animals. Love trees. Give out of love!
